Taking Exams
Most of our courses (not Environmental Management or Agriculture) provide suitable preparation for either CIE or Edexcel IGCSE exams.
Alternatively, you may register as a ‘private candidate’ with a CIE centre of your choice which is willing to accept private candidates. There are currently eleven such centres in the UK. You will be sent full details when enrolling and can contact your chosen centre directly to make arrangements to sit exams. It is always well worthwhile approaching local schools & colleges which often prove helpful in acting as an exam centre. If you take the Edexcel option, you will be able to sit the exams as a ‘private candidate.’ You will need to contact Edexcel IGCSE centres listed on their website (http://www.edexcel-international.org/quals/ - IGCSE - Noticeboard - Information for private candidates in UK) and make your own arrangements with the individual centre concerned. We can provide details of the syllabus number and papers you will need to sit but it will be your responsibility to register for the exams. In all cases, you should remember that exam registration should be carried out well in advance. Exam dates ,in the case of both exam boards, will extend over several weeks and you will need to plan your exams well in advance. For those coming to our exam centre on St.Martin’s, this is an opportunity to combine exams with a family holiday in Scilly's unique and unspoiled environment. On the beautiful island of St. Martin's, taking exams does not need to be a stressful Penzance itself has excellent road and rail links with the rest of the country, including an overnight sleeper from London. From St. Mary's it's just a 20 minute launch trip to St. Martin's. The island is well used to catering for visitors. There is a range of self-catering flats, chalets and cottages, bed and breakfast, guest house, luxury hotel or camp site - something to suit all pockets with rates being especially favourable for the Autumn exam session. In order to keep costs to a minimum, our main exams are taken in the October/November session. Registration for exams must be done well in advance - January for the summer exams and July for the Autumn session. The cost of exams is £80 per subject - this covers Cambridge fees, the actual exam fee and centre costs. There is an additional small fee for invigilation depending on numbers. Early bookings are also essential for both travel and accommodation - Scilly is a very popular holiday destination!
The islands are dotted with the remains of earlier civilisations as well as castles from the time of the Civil War. On St. Martin's there is a diving centre for those wanting to explore Scilly's clear blue waters or to have a family afternoon snorkeling with the seals. An instructor is also available for canoeing whilst, on St.Mary's, there's windsurfing and sailing. Scilly also abounds in art galleries and craft workshops. Then, of course, there are the endless stunning, white beaches, always near deserted even in the height of Summer. ![]() Before deciding to register for exams at the Isles of Scilly Centre, please ensure that you have checked the availability of accommodation and flights.
